Which resolution should you actually game at?
Resolution is the single biggest lever on GPU load. Moving from 1080p to 1440p is roughly 1.8 times the pixels; going to 4K is about four times 1080p. Your processor barely notices the change, which is why resolution is also the fastest way to move a bottleneck from the CPU to the GPU.
This advisor estimates the frame rate your parts should reach at each common resolution, so you can pick the one that matches how you play rather than the highest number your monitor supports.
How resolution, refresh rate and settings interact
Think of it as a budget with three claims on it. Higher resolution costs GPU time per frame. Higher refresh rate demands more frames per second. Higher settings raise the cost of every frame. You can afford roughly two of the three comfortably on most hardware.

Running 4K at 40 FPS with reduced settings usually looks and feels worse than 1440p at 100 FPS with high settings. Match the display to the hardware you actually have.
Consider upscaling honestly
Quality-mode upscaling from 1440p to 4K is genuinely useful and often near-indistinguishable in motion. Aggressive performance modes at low base resolutions are much more visible — treat them as a last resort, not a plan.

Running a high-refresh monitor at a frame rate nowhere near it
A 165 Hz panel fed 55 FPS gives you the smoothness of 55 FPS. Either lower settings or resolution to feed the panel, or accept that the refresh rate was not the part worth paying for.
Assuming 4K is always the goal
Beyond a certain pixel density at normal viewing distance the returns fall off quickly, while the GPU cost keeps rising. Many people are better served putting that budget into refresh rate or panel quality.
Estimates assume typical high settings and no upscaling unless you account for it yourself. Individual games vary widely — an engine-heavy open-world title and a competitive shooter can differ by several times at identical settings.
