Which graphics settings actually cost you frames?

Graphics settings are not equally expensive. A handful of options consume most of your GPU time while contributing comparatively little to how a game looks in motion, and a much larger group costs almost nothing at all. Knowing which is which is the difference between a considered preset and blindly dragging everything to Low.

This advisor suggests a starting preset for your hardware at your resolution, aimed at holding a sensible frame rate without throwing away image quality you would actually notice.

The settings that dominate GPU cost

Ray tracing is in a category of its own — it is frequently the single most expensive option in any game that offers it. Shadow quality, volumetric lighting and fog, screen-space reflections, and ambient occlusion follow. These are where your frames go.

Texture quality is the important exception. It is nearly free in terms of GPU time as long as the textures fit in video memory, and it has a large effect on perceived sharpness. Keep textures high and spend your cuts elsewhere — unless you are short on VRAM, in which case textures are the first thing that must come down.

An empty corridor will happily run at any settings. Use a busy area with lots of geometry, foliage and lighting, and return to the same spot each time.

Keep textures as high as VRAM allows

It is the best quality-per-frame setting in most games. Only reduce it when you are genuinely running out of video memory — which shows up as stutter and late-loading textures, not as a lower average.

Watch frame times, not just the average

A setting that leaves your average untouched but causes periodic spikes will feel worse than one that costs a few frames consistently. Smoothness beats a bigger number.

Common mistakes

Using the Low preset by reflex

Low often disables cheap effects that contribute a lot to how a game reads, while leaving you well above your monitor's refresh rate. A tuned High is usually both faster where it matters and much better looking.

Leaving ray tracing on because it sounds better

On mid-range hardware it can halve your frame rate. If you are struggling to hold a target, this is the first switch to try — and often the only one you need.

Ignoring frame-rate limits and sync settings

An uncapped frame rate on a mismatched display produces tearing and inconsistent pacing. Capping slightly below your refresh rate frequently feels smoother than running flat out.

Suggestions are a starting point from public benchmark data, not per-game measurements. Engines differ enormously in what they charge for a given setting, so verify in the specific game you are tuning.
